Privacy & Data Use

Last updated: May 2026 · BookWorm / MichiganReads AI

Who this app is for

BookWorm is designed for Michigan elementary school students in grades 3–7, their teachers, and their families. Because we serve children, we take data privacy seriously and comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Michigan Student Data Privacy Act.

What we collect

  • Account information — student name, grade level, and email address used to create an account.
  • Voice audio — when a student reads aloud, their voice is captured and sent to Microsoft Azure for pronunciation analysis. The audio is processed in real time and is not stored permanently by BookWorm.
  • Reading scores — accuracy, fluency, and completeness scores generated from each reading session are stored so students and teachers can track progress over time.
  • Chat messages — conversations with Bookworm (our AI reading tutor) are stored to provide continuity across sessions and help Bookworm remember a student's progress.
  • Comprehension and confidence responses — answers to comprehension questions and how a student reported feeling about a reading session are stored as part of their learning record.
  • Difficult words — words a student mispronounced are logged to identify patterns and guide practice over time.

Who receives student data

To provide its features, BookWorm shares data with the following trusted services. No data is ever sold or used for advertising.

Microsoft Azure
Processes voice audio for pronunciation scoring and powers the Bookworm microphone. Audio is analyzed in real time and not retained.
IBM watsonx (Granite)
Receives student name, grade, reading scores, and mispronounced words to generate personalized reading feedback and teacher reports.
Google Cloud TTS
Converts Bookworm's text responses into spoken audio. Receives only the text of Bookworm's messages, not student data.
Groq (Llama 3.1)
Powers Bookworm conversation summaries. Receives anonymized conversation excerpts to generate brief session notes.
Supabase
Stores all account data, reading sessions, and Bookworm conversation summaries securely in a US-based database.

How long data is kept

Student data is retained for the duration of the school year and deleted upon request. Teachers can request deletion of any student's data at any time. We do not keep data longer than necessary.

Your rights

  • Parents have the right under COPPA and FERPA to review, correct, or delete their child's data.
  • Teachers can remove a student from their class at any time, which stops new data collection for that student.
  • Students can ask their teacher or a parent to request data deletion on their behalf.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell student data to any third party.
  • We do not use student data to serve advertising.
  • We do not share data with any party not listed above.
  • We do not use student data to train AI models without explicit consent.

Contact us

To request data deletion, ask a privacy question, or report a concern, email us at privacy@michiganreads.ai. We will respond within 5 business days.
